The Barbara Bush
Library Friends were presented with a $50,000 donation
from the Houston Golf Association at the September 12
luncheon meeting of the Houston Northwest Chamber of
Commerce. In recognition of this donation, the meeting
room of the new Barbara Bush Library will be named in
memory of Earl Elliott, a past President of the HGA. All
donated funds will be used to purchase children's books
for the new library.
Mr. Elliott was a
successful attorney and real estate developer who was also
involved in the oil and gas business. He also wrote
children's books and produced the movie "Billy
Jack." He used his work
with the Houston Golf Association to help generate
millions of dollars for local worthy causes. His passion
was helping others. He was the
second recipient of the PGA TOUR's "Volunteer of the
Year" award in 2000.
"He's been a
great ambassador for golf, not only in Houston, but
everywhere," said fellow Champion member, Steve
Elkington, when asked about the late Earl Elliott. Elliott
was a member of the Champions Golf Club for many years and
served as chairman for every major golf event the club
hosted, including the Tour Championship.
"Earl Elliott
was a part of Houston golf history," said Ben
Crenshaw, former Masters Champion. "U. S. Opens,
Ryder Cups, U.S. Amateur, Women's Mid-Amateur, PGA TOUR
events ... he unselfishly donated his time to every level
of the game."
Elliott played a
major role in the creation of the South Texas Amateur Golf
Association in 1994. "He was a great man and a great
friend of golf," commented Dick Forester, a longtime
friend and PGA pro. "He did so many things behind the
scenes to help build our game in this city."
Mr. Elliott lost
his battle with esophageal cancer on October 26, 2001 at
the age of 74.
